From the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lebanon one feels that Heaven embraces the Earth and places it in the Heart of Mary. There, Mary radiates a glow around the saddened hearts, making a tiny place like Harissa a refuge for the penitent, a comfort for the afflicted, a way for the straying, and a guide and oasis for weary souls to rest.
The word harissa comes from the word haras which means sharp blade, knife, any cutting tool or even wire in Arabic and Hebrew. And this corresponds to the nature of the hill on which the village stands, called "Roueiss" by its inhabitants. Therefore, some historians believe that the ancient Semitic word harissa means roueiss in Arabic, a high and steep hill.
Overlooking the Bay of Jounieh, the Sanctuary was built on a plot of 350 hectares, 650 meters above sea level and 26 kilometers north of Beirut, on Mount Mohafazat, Lebanon. As it is adjacent to Daroun Village, it is part of the Kesrwan Hunt. It is also close to Bkerke, the seat of the Maronite Patriarchate. It is famous for its vegetation, the multitude of its trees, the abundance and purity of its springs. It's the door to paradise...
On the occasion of the fiftieth commemoration of the dogma of the "Immaculate Conception" proclaimed by His Holiness Pope Pius IX in 1854. It was announced, His Beatitude the Maronite Patriarch Elias Hoayek and the Apostolic Nuncio Carlos Duval decided to erect a religious monument to commemorate this event.
According to Father Henri Jalabert sj, Lucien Cattin, then Superior Father of the Jesuits in the Middle East, proposed erecting a large statue of the Virgin that would be visible from afar and illustrate the honor and attachment of the Lebanese people to Mary.
After the patriarch and nuncio sought advice from bishops, priests, monks and lay people, the shrine was named after Our Lady of Lebanon and the project was launched.
After consultation with engineers who were authorities in the area, a site on top of Harissa Hill called "The Rock" was chosen to build the shrine and the implementation phase approached. Committees began raising funds to carry out the project. The generosity of the Lebanese people placed their love on Mary.
After negotiations, Mr. Francis Yaacoub sold the land to the Patriarchate for the symbolic sum of fifty Ottoman pounds.
The cornerstone was laid in October 1904, but work was halted for various reasons; One was the fear that the earth would not be able to support a monument of this size.
In 1907, Patriarch Hoayek and Monsignor Fridiano Giannini, the new Apostolic Nuncio, resumed the works and made some adjustments to the project, such as expanding the west side of the sanctuary.
To ensure that construction was carried out correctly, a deed was signed in 1906 with a construction company as the first party and master craftsman Ibrahim Makhlouf (from Ain el Rihaneh) as the second party. The statue was erected in 1907.
It is good to remember that Fr. Chucrallah Khoury, Superior of the Lebanese Maronite Missionaries, was the Patriarch's right hand man in directing and executing the project from the beginning. He was elected Father Superior of the Congregation following the election of Father Youssef Moubarak as Bishop of the Diocese of Saida.
With the help of the Apostolic Herald and in particular Father Pere, Secretary of the Herald, and Cattin, Father Superior of the Jesuits, the Patriarch managed to overcome the financial problem arising from the size and cost of the project, sending a letter to the Maronite "Wakfs" and Institutions of Charity asking them to pay a pre-agreed amount which will be collected by Father Chucrallah Khoury.
The construction of the shrine and statue cost approximately 50,000 French gold francs, donated by the faithful; including a French woman who wishes to remain anonymous and has made a contribution of 16,000 francs. The land was offered by the Maronite Patriarch and Nuncio.
In compliance with his last wish, the body was transferred to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lebanon by Bishop Duval of Beirut. On the west wall of the shrine is a marble plaque engraved with the story of the event in Latin, in appreciation of Duval's love for the Virgin and his passion for her shrine in Lebanon.
To erect such a monument, a faraman (decree of the sultan) had to be issued, declaring the approval of the then ruling Ottoman authorities. Mount Lebanon “Mutassaref”, Mouzher Bacha, sent a telegram asking for approval from Istanbul and, almost miraculously, received a positive response just a few hours later.
In early 1908, the shrine and pedestal of the statue were executed under the supervision of Father Chucrallah Khoury, who was officially appointed by the Patriarch to be in charge of the project. Shortly afterwards, the image of Our Mother Mary was erected and the dedication took place on May 3rd, the first Sunday of that month.
At 10:00 am Bishop Giannini began the opening ceremony with prayers and then blessed the sanctuary and the statue, giving thanks to God for an achievement that would nurture and develop genuine faith. The devout congregation was informed of His Holiness Pope Pius X's message to shower heavenly blessings on all those who contributed to the project's implementation or those who attended the opening ceremony.
Among the guests were the Lebanese Brigadier Barbar Beik El Khazen, representing Lebanon “Mutassaref” Youssef Franco Bacha, and His Excellency Habib Beik Bitar, “Ca'im-macam” of Kesrwan hunting, as well as a large crowd of faithful and visitors
The ceremony was followed by Holy Mass, celebrated by Patriarch Hoayek, Bishops, Superiors General, representatives of the Eastern and Western Congregations and numerous priests.
During his homily, the Patriarch emphasized to the Lebanese people his love and devotion to Mary and asked for her protection and tireless intercession. At the end of the Mass he led a solemn procession through the sanctuary carrying the icon of the Blessed Virgin. He declared the first Sunday in May as the feast of Our Lady of Lebanon.
shrine administration
After the dedication ceremonies, as mentioned in article 4 of the charter registered in Bkerke on January 18, 1907, the Maronite Patriarch and Apostolic Nuncio, through his superior, officially entrusted the leadership of the Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon to the Lebanese Missionary Maronite General, Father Youssef. Moubarak, on the Herald website in Harissa.
It wasn't too late when more land was acquired to improve facilities for worshipers and visitors, and little by little the Sanctuary became what it is today, an international place of worship.
An 8 x 8 m chapel with capacity for 100 people was built under the statue of the Virgin Mary. It was designed by the famous French architect Gio.
Next to the square stone altar is the wooden statue of Mary, Mother of Light (which toured almost all Lebanese cities and towns in 1954). A cedar and bunches of grapes are engraved in the center of the tabernacle. The stained glass windows are decorated with the symbols of the consecrated host, grapes and ears of wheat.
The seven-part bronze statue of Our Lady of Lebanon is 8.5 m high and 5 m in diameter; It weighs 15 tons and is painted white for added splendor and splendor. It was made in Lyon (France) under the supervision of Mr. Durenne, who escorted him to the port of Beirut in late July 1906.
The base of the statue, 20 m high, is shaped like a log carved from natural stone. The lower diameter measures 64 m and the upper part 20 m. A ladder of 104 steps was built to reach the top of the statue. (A drawing of the statue and its pedestal by the famous painter Daoud Corm is kept in the basilica.)
In 1956, a plastic and wooden tent was erected on the west side of the sanctuary's entrance to accommodate the growing number of worshipers and visitors to Mass, especially during the month of May.
As a result, on the occasion of the sanctuary's golden jubilee, it was decided to build a larger church to accommodate the large crowd of worshipers.
On May 31, 1970, in the presence of the then Lebanese President Charles Helou and his Prime Minister Rachid Karame, ministers and deputies, Orthodox bishops and Orthodox bishops, His Beatitude the Maronite Patriarch Paul-Pierre Meouchy laid the cornerstone of the future basilica, frequented by Catholics and numerous faithful.
From the beginning, Patriarch Meouchy handed over the management and administration of the basilica to Lebanese Maronite missionaries through his superior, Father Sassine Zeidan. He was assisted by an Executive Committee formed in late 1968 after a meeting between Patriarch Meouchy and Father Sassine Zeidan.
This commission was composed of Father Sassine Zeidan (President), Lebanese Missionary Father Youssef Andary, Architect Adib Sader (Secretary), Pharmacist Cesar Chalhoub, Engineer Emile Kayssar (Director General of the Ministry of Public Works), Joseph Salhab (Director General of the Ministry of Tourism), the architect François Chemaly (Mayor of Daroun-Harissa) and Fouad Boulos (President of the Harissa Cable Car Board).
This committee worked to secure the information, financial, architectural and logistical aspects of the project to begin construction. Detailed drawings and plans were requested from the architects.
To select the best project, Patriarch Meouchy and Nuncio Alfredo Bruniera constituted an arbitration commission composed by the Nuncio himself, Father Sassine Zeidan, representing Patriarch Meouchy, and five eminent architects: Georges Maroun, President of the Order of Engineers and Architects, Henri Eddé, former president of the Order of Engineers and Architects, Mitri Nammar, Director of the Department of Urbanism, and two other French architects.
After discarding two of the four projects and hesitating to choose between José Husseini's proposal and Pierre Khoury's proposal, the commission voted four to three in favor of the latter.
Construction work continued uninterrupted, even in the most difficult times. Once the initial leveling of the land was completed, in June 1971 the foundations were completed, the walls and the esplanade were erected, and the rest of the work continued.
Engineer Louis Cordahi did some of the work, but most of it was done by engineer Mouin Aoun and his team who, armed with faith and perseverance and the trust of Father Paul Najm, Superior General of the Missionaries, managed to build a high ceiling. in the form of a Phoenician ship with curved beams 64 m long. To carry out this part, the engineers had to consult with two French companies: one to supervise the assembly of the scaffolding and the other to help design and erect the huge glass facade.
