Land Rover Freelander TD4

  • Year/miles: 2004/124k
  • Price: £995
  • Production years: 1997-2006
  • Engine: 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel, 110 hp
  • Top speed: 102 mph
  • 0-62 mph: 13.2 seconds

12

If you're looking for good, clean fun, the tough Freelander isn't for you. With all-wheel drive and Hill Descent Control, the Mud Plug can go where other SUVs can't. However, it's just as capable on the road, with precise handling and a powerful 2.0-litre diesel engine.

The chunky look gives it street cred, while a few minutes with a key transforms the practical three-door into a cool convertible. It has potential electrical and quality issues, but the Freelander is still the best cheap 4x4 by far.

Subaru Forester Turbo S

  • Year/miles: 2001/138km
  • Price: £1,250
  • Production years: 1997-2002
  • Engine: 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol, 168 hp
  • Top speed: 123 mph
  • 0-62 mph: 8.4 seconds

While the Forester looks like a dependable SUV, lurking beneath its lines is a fire-breathing motorsport hero. A crossover before the term was coined, it has similar suspension, 4WD and a four-cylinder turbo to the rally star Impreza.

The 2.0-liter engine is detuned to 168 hp, but still enough to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds, while driving is just as fun as its sedan sibling. A full service history is essential, but as a can-do-it-all family car, the fun Forester is in a class of its own.

bmw x5

  • Year/miles: 2003/142k
  • Price: £2,650
  • Production years: 1998-2004
  • Engine: 4.4 liter V8 gasoline, 282 hp
  • Top speed: 143 mph
  • 0-62 mph: 7.5 seconds

12

There's nothing like a true wolf-on-sheep machine to make you laugh out loud behind the wheel, and few offer such a combination of stealth and speed.

So bmw On the surface it looks like any other first generation X5, but underneath its beefy exterior is a 282bhp 4.4-litre V8.

With that, the imposing German SUV can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 143 km/h. Unlike rival off-roaders that roll and wallow around corners, the big X5 has impressive planting and is stable, feeling more like a giant hatch than heavy mud.

Even better, it combines those tense driving dynamics with familiar agility. There's a spacious, well-finished and well-appointed interior, as well as a large trunk with a practical split tailgate. Of course, the best things in life are rarely free, and you'll need a lot of cash for fuel, maintenance, and e-cigarettes. But all will be forgiven when you hear that V8 growling and surprise another sports car with a bucket.

Hedacia dusterIt was succeeded by an all-new model in 2022, but the first-generation car forged the personality that made this comfortable SUV such a success, which is why it remains a great used buy.

For around £4,000 you can get a top-notch Lauréate. While smaller models come almost without equipment, this car offers toys like Bluetooth, air conditioning and stereo.

So while it was once the expensive option in the range, the creature comforts now make it the go-to option. It's cheap inside, but there's plenty of room and a reliable 108hp diesel engine for decent fuel economy.

Heas Kia Sorentois among the best cars in the large SUV segment today, and the latest model's performance is based onthe third generation carthat preceded it. This car was first released in 2015, priced at £28,795. Only a 2.2 liter diesel engine was offered, although all models had four-wheel drive and enough seating for seven.

Both manual and automatic options were available, but we think the latter suits the Sorento's character better. Entry-level KX-1 cars had DAB radio, Bluetooth, air conditioning, cruise control and rear parking sensors, so your decision on which trim level to focus on will depend on what style you want your car to have. If you're looking for a crane, the KX-2 model is worth upgrading for its self-levelling suspension.

The quality of the interior is really very high and there is a lot of space inside, however, this third row of seats is only suitable for children.

SUVs don't come much more capable. For 2012, Land Rover has upgraded its V6 biturbo diesel to 253PS and 600Nm of torque, which, combined with excellent four-wheel drive and terrain response, allows theDiscoverytackling virtually any type of terrain imaginable.

Used Land Rover Discovery 4 review

As a highway cruiser, it has a supple, compliant ride and does a reasonable job of hiding its bulk in corners. Inside, the range-topping HSE combines luxury with robust functionality, and don't forget its seven-seat layout.

There's another reason to use the Discovery 4: Reliability has improved over the Discovery 3, which means you'll pay less to operate one over the course of your property. Add the best and most economical inboard engine to the equation and you have the makings of a great used buy.

Skoda Yeti

  • Year/miles:2012/74 mil
  • Price:4.350€
  • Motor:2.0 liter 4 cylinder, 109 hp
  • Economy:62 mpg
  • CO2:118 grams per kilometer

HeSkoda YetiIt has something of a cult following, with the luxury crossover proving to be greater than the sum of its parts over its lifetime. Not only was it one of the most practical cars in its class, it was also excellent to drive and developed a reputation for reliability among owners.

Heyetiit was offered with front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, the latter being exclusive to the 1.8 petrol and 2.0 diesel engines with 138 hp and 168 hp, respectively. 4WD can also be selected on the 109PS version of the 2.0-litre diesel. Grip was excellent in muddy and snowy conditions, and the system reduced throttle response to reduce wheel spin. An off-road mode automatically controls traction, descents and braking, making the Yeti one of the easiest off-road cars on the market.

One area where the Yeti falls short is fuel economy. While 62 mpg looks promising on paper, you're more likely to see 40 mpg in real-world driving. Things aren't helped by the aerodynamic design, which can be heard on the road in the form of excessive wind noise.

hyundai santa fe

Em 2007hyundaiwas on its way to becoming a serious rival to the dominant European and Japanese companies, and was theSanta Fewho led the attack.

True, it lacked the refined driving manners of its class leaders, but it made up for it with excellent value for money for a large SUV that offered up to seven seats, a powerful diesel engine and lots of equipment. Excellent handling ensured that all occupants were comfortable on the move and the 969 liter trunk offered the kind of space few competitive cars could match at the time.

Suzuki SX-4 S-Cruz

  • Year/miles:2013/50 mil
  • Price:4.800€
  • Motor:1.6 liter 4 cylinder, 118 hp
  • Economy:67,2 mpg
  • CO2/tax:110g/km
  • EuroNCAP:5 stars (2009)

Not the prettiest SUV, but theSuzuki SX-4 S-CruzIt's a simple and relatively efficient option with excellent all-weather performance thanks to its efficient four-wheel drive system. We used one in our fleet in 2014 and it impressed with its solid feel and lack of gimmicks. The 430-litre trunk is practical, while the six-footer fits comfortably in the rear.

The small diesel engine is strong and the fuel economy is respectable. It has to be said that previous iterations of the car weren't the best in style, but they made up for that with an impressive list of equipment that belied its price.

If you need a reliable and affordable small SUV, the SX4 S-Cross is a great alternative to some of the pricier options when it first appeared in 2013.

Fiat Panda 4x4

el mk3fiat pandawas released in early 2012, though only a little laterPanda 4x4entered the lineup. Putting an all-wheel drive system in a city car doesn't make a lot of sense at first glance, but with Fiat introducing the first Panda 4x4 in 1983 and having sold 6.5 million models since then, there was clearly a demand to meet it. them. .

In addition to four-wheel drive, the Panda 4x4 received sheet steel, plastic bumpers and wheel arch extensions, a raised suspension for better ground clearance and a new electronic rear differential for genuine off-road capability. Fiat even added 15-inch alloy wheels fitted with mud and snow tires for when the going gets tough in winter.

Engine options included a 1.3 liter 74hp diesel or an 895cc 84hp petrol turbo. On paper, they could return 60.1 and 57.6 mpg respectively, largely due to the Panda 4x4's relatively light bodywork. The luggage compartment was 225 liters and there was enough head and leg room in the back for two adults to sit comfortably.

That's itNissan Qashqai second generationIt was first launched in the UK in early 2014, with all-wheel drive available on the 1.6-litre diesel.

All Qashqais came with air conditioning, Hill Start Assist, cruise control with speed limiter function and five-inch color touchscreen as standard, and while front-wheel drive suited most buyers, four-wheel drive wheels was a good choice for those who needed towing. Incidentally, the towbar was the subject of the first Qashqai recall in 2014, which identified a manufacturing flaw that could cause the towbar to come off.

Aside from the added grip and traction, the Qashqai has been an excellent family car ever since Nissan took a leap of faith when it released the original in 2007. It was then the first proper crossover and the tsunami of SUVs that came to dominate the market began. . market today.
